Contributions to a History of The Richmond Howitzer Battalion

Introduction and Index by the late Lee A. Wallace, Jr.

At a meeting on December 3, 1874, about forty veterans of the Richmond Howitzers organized an association that would keep alive the memories and friendshipsof the war. Annual meetings were held. In 1883, the association published Pamphlet No. 1, Contributions to a History of The Richmond Howitzer Battalion. The purpose was to preserve the history of the three artillery companies. Contributions in the way of diaries, reminiscences, order books, muster and pay rolls, and official reports were solicited. Eventually four pamphlets were printed. In their entirety, the booklets provide a treasure trove of material on these artillery companies.

The 1st Company joined Confederate service in June, 1861. It served at First Manassas and in the various campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Williamsburg to Appomattox. The 2nd Company was organized in May, 1861. It saw action from Seven Pines to Appomattox. The 3rd Company was formed in June, 1861. It saw active service from the Maryland Campaign to Appomattox.

This reissue of a scarce collection of pamphlets is long overdue and should be a welcome addition to any Civil War library.
