The Sultana Saga

by Rex T. Jackson

Those who survived the carnage and bloodshed of the Civil War were men who demonstrated courage and valor under fire, as they faced a blazing din of lead on the many battlefields easy and west of the Mississippi River. There were others, after having endured the horrors of fierce battle, who were taken prisoner, experiencing disease, starvation, and all manner of human suffering in prison camps until the war's end.

However, few could conceive that many of these same brave souls, after having suffered through such trials and tribulations as these, would find themselves finally headed home aboard a doomed, overloaded riverboat steamer and have to struggle for their lives in the cold swift currents of the Mississippi River and witness the demise of hundreds of their comrades in armsñafter the war was over and peace was declared.
