The Ninth Regiment New York Volunteers (Hawkins Zouaves)
by Lieut. Matthew J. Graham
The Ninth New York Infantry, also known as Hawkinsí Zouaves, served admirably in the Eastern Theatre of the American Civil War. Best remembered for their gaudy Zouave uniforms, this regiment spearheaded the Federal Army of the Potomacís advance into the streets of the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland during the Battle of Antietam, Americaís bloodiest day, September 17, 1862. The men of the Ninth New York Infantry advanced farther than any other Federal regiment engaged that day.
