Hampton & His Cavalry in `64

By Edward L. Wells

The death of Stuart elevated Hampton to command of Leeís cavalry during brutal months of 1864. Grant was in command and doggedly pushed his campaign of attrition to bring the war to an end.

The Federal Cavalry of the early years had evolved into a veteran force. Reorganized into brigades and divisions under aggressive, experienced commanders they became an offensive weapon to be hurled at shrinking Confederate resources.

Hampton met this threat in a series of clashes in what he recalled as, ìa time when we couldnít bury our dead.î

Outnumbered on every field, leadership, courage, and sometimes desperation brought defeat to the Federals or denied their purpose every time.

Written by one who survived Co K, Charleston Light Dragoons, 4th S.C. Cavalry, Wells rode in the fights, knew the soldiers involved, endured heat of battle and wrote that their sacrifice would not be forgotten.
