To its soldiers, the regiment was known as the Gallant Twenty Fourth. Formed early in 1862, it was the first South Carolina Regiment that enlisted for the period of the War. The regiment served at several hot spots along the coast from Pocotaligo, S.C. to Wilmington, N.C., and then traveled to Mississippi to join Johnston's relief army during the siege of Vicksburg. Finally it joined the Army of Tennessee for the battles of Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta and Jonesboro. The 24th was in the front line of Brown's division during the ill-fated attack into the teeth of the enemy guns at Franklin, and lost many men captured at Nashville. The Gallant Regiment was one of only four from South Carolina permanently assigned to the Army of Tennessee. Many openly admired the regiment's bearing and courage saying that it served "en militaire" and would "do to tie to". Its men performed their duty well and "behaved finely" until the final surrender in North Carolina. Both of the 24thís commanders, Clement Stevens and Ellison Capers, were promoted to General.
